In the early 90s, Mattel released a sideline of three African American girls: Shani, Nichelle and Asha and their boyfriend Jamal. They all have their own face. But this was a separate series and not related to Barbie and her friends/family. The giver of the name of the small series was Shani (Maoni in Europe) - the main character (like Barbie with her girlfriends). Shani not only got her own face, she also showcased a new body type. But the Shani series was not particularly successful, so it was reinstated after a few dolls. This triangular face mold was also used for Barbie United Color of Benetton, Barbie Happy Holiday, Barbie Birthday Wishes 2017, Barbie Diva, Barbie Holiday (Christmas) 2019.
